I’m excited to announce that the Golden Fire Department in Golden, Colorado will soon have a new life-sized female firefighter sculpture installed in front of their building. Today, the sculpture is on its way to the bronze factory. This piece will be installed alongside another of my custom firefighter sculptures titled “Follow Your Heart.”
The original adaptation of “Follow Your Heart” resides in front of Windsor Severance Fire Rescue in Windsor, Colorado, and features a child sitting on a bench with a male firefighter kneeling in front of him in conversation. The new custom sculpture in Golden will feature the same firefighter and child but with a unique addition of a female firefighter standing behind the bench with her hand on the child’s shoulder. By adding a female firefighter to the sculpture, using a female firefighter as the model, I wanted to demonstrate how diversity in the fire service is growing & more women are joining fire departments around the country.
Breaking Barriers and Saving Lives: The Crucial Role of Female Firefighters
When picturing a firefighter, the image often comes to mind is that of a strong and courageous individual clad in gear, battling raging flames to save lives and property. While this image is accurate, it’s essential to recognize that the world of firefighting has evolved beyond traditional gender roles, and the inclusion of female firefighters is making a significant impact. The rise of women in firefighting not only breaks down long-standing stereotypes but also brings diverse perspectives and skill sets to a profession vital to our communities.
Inspiration for Future Generations
Every female firefighter is a role model, demonstrating that pursuing one’s passion should know no bounds. As young girls witness women battling blazes and saving lives, they are shown that career paths are not determined by gender but by dedication and determination. By encouraging girls to envision themselves as firefighters, we are sowing the seeds for a future where women continue to thrive in all sectors of society.
